Some folks have never heard of Caribs or Garifuna but the folks who have are very interested in the history, heritage, spirituality, culture and language.

Then, there are are the folks who were born Garifuna but have been far removed from the culture and the language. A few year ago when the Caribs or Garifuna were introduced in the popular Johnny Depp movie "Pirates of the Caribbean", things changes and the Caribs or the Garifuna people came on the scene especially after the Caribs protested and demonstrated their disapproval of the manner in which they were depicted in a negative light. The Caribs, as they were describes years ago were also depicted in the movie as Cannibals or flesh eaters.

Today, the Caribs or Garifuna people are struggling to keep their history, heritage, culture and language alive. In the year 2000, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Communication Organization (UNESCO) declared the Garifuna culture and language as endangered and facing extinction. Since then Garifuna people has taken it upon themselves to try to turn this critical endangered and facing extinction crisis around . Moreover, after the Caribs or the Garifuna people noticed that the majority of Garifuna children, youth and young adults are no longer speaking Garifuna, and now prefer to speak the other language of the land called "Creole", Garifuna native speaker are now revolting and are doing all they can to change things around and to bring back their language and to get their children, youth and young adults to revive the speaking of Garifuna by any means necessary.

Most of the members of GAMAE International Inc., are native Garifuna speakers and they are committed to creating programs to promote, protect and preserve the Carib or Garifuna language. This Digital Online Classroom is the first of their effort to bring the Garifuna language back into the community and back into the hearts, sould and language of the Garifuna children, youth and young adults.
